Why are we?
The people of Israel stood at the border of the Promised Land and listened to the report of the 10 spies. The spies saw themselves as grasshoppers in the face of the giants. The enemy had intimated them; posing the question in their own hearts about who they thought they were and the reply was “we are grasshoppers.” (Num 14).
Our experiences form our values and God had given them new experiences that were to form new values and beliefs about themselves. They saw themselves as wretched slaves, wandering about with an invisible God, instead of a special, redeemed people, living in the miraculous power of God Almighty. Many times we don’t reflect on the new experiences God has been giving us an don’t understand the new story God is writing about you. God saved them; he fed, led, protected and healed them. To see what God had been doing they needed to look back!
Sometimes we think we shouldn’t look back, but he was talking about looking back at the old life and longing for the way it was in the world -the leeks and the garlic. But we should look back at the things that God has done and remember them and think on them. At communion, Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me.”
Friend, look back and see all the times He has protected and provided, led and encouraged us. Think of all His acts of great love for you. It will change your life and the way you think of yourself, giving you a sense of value dignity and security.
