Communion

The wealthy friends of the house turned up early for the church gathering and sat down with their host to wait for the rest of the church to arrive.  Usually wealthy Christians would open up their Roman Greek villas for church gatherings.  They filled in the time eating and drinking in the tri-clinum. The slaves would have to wait till after work before they could turn up and when they arrived the wealthy were already  drunk and as they was not enough room in the tri-climium for them, they would be put out in the  atrium. Paul wrote and said “you are drinking the cup in an unworthy manner not discerning the Lord’s body.”  This was not about being irreverent about the bread it’s about being reverent  toward the church people; about the wealthy despising the poor; about treating them indifferently and putting them out in the garden hungry and thirsty.

Friend, we can enjoy the Lords supper without fear as we enjoy and love all those in the family and think of others in the body.
